Walking into the barn, or what I thought was a barn, I could feel my nerves take over. After I step in I can hear Thom close the doors behind me. I couldn’t bear to turn around because my stomach was in knots now, my cheeks were probably several shades of red.

The room had a large wooden work table with tools sprawled about it and what looks like a saddle, maybe a mold of a saddle sitting atop of it. An earthly smell filled my senses, maybe it was all the leather and oils visible. There was a recliner on the edge of a five foot wooden wall with a few bales of hay next to it. A large flannel blanket lay strewn upon the recliner.

It was obvious, he spent much of his time in this room working and apparently sleeping too. Was this before his wife and him were separated or after as well? That is a large house to want to be alone in, from what he’s said I guess he was alone when she was here too.

To my right a sound catches my ear, I look over to see three stables but only one horse was there. It’s tall - sienna brown with white splotches and black hair. It looks me over from afar, then goes on about its business of eating.

“So th-this is my work pl-place,” Thom says walking up next to me, “I b-basically only go h-home to eat.”

Shaking my head I look down, “I kind of figured that out…. It’s spacious.”

He points to the table, “I make saddles there…” he walks over to the recliner and grabs the blanket up and throws it over his shoulder, “Sleep h-here.”

“Where’s the television?” I ask laughing walking over to follow him on his tour.

He shakes his head no, “Television isn’t allowed in here, only one in the house – in the boys room.” Grabbing my hand he leads me around the corner.

On the other side of the five foot wall was a mirror that filled the section of one part of the wall. A small work stool sat in front of the mirror. I looked at Thom who was further back in the barn at the stables petting the horse.

“What is this?” I ask not wanting to go to the horse. Animals and I don’t mix well.

Walking up he places the blanket over the wall next to the mirror, “Well… th-this is wh-where I’d sit…” his pause was long and his face deep in thought, “I h-had to re… learn how to speak. I’d s-s-sit here and t-t-talk to myself or try to.” He places his hand on his chin that was quivering.

Grabbing his hand he pushes mine away, “No, no… it’s okay. It t-t-took me so long ‘cause I’d g-get mad and go make saddles. It was a hob-hob-hobby, but I m-m-made so many it became a business.”

“Short stool…” I say as a distraction before he grabs my arm and yanks me into him kissing me hard and deep.
